8th Grade class trip to the Brewer's game

Dear 8th Grade Parents,
Wow, the home stretch is clearly here when we start talking about the 8th Grade class trip to the Brewers game!  Your son(s) and daughter(s) will soon be taking a milestone step in their education as they enter their freshman year of high school at SMSA!  Part of that process is an end of the school year 8th grade class trip. As the norm for all 8th grade students for attending the trip, we have some expectations you and your child/children will want to talk about at home.  Fourth quarter can get a bit busy and quite chaotic, so we would like you to review the information in advance and in writing, before we start sharing expectations with your child/children.

Students may forfeit their attendance to the Brewer’s game for the following reasons:
Missing work-students may not have ANY missing work two days prior to the trip.  Teachers will be giving extra communication regarding missing work the week prior and will submit to Mr. Smith a list of students not able to attend the day before departure.  Parents will be notified by Mr. Smith with a phone call.
Students may not have any U’s in any subject.
Students may not have 2 or more detentions given during the 4th quarter. If a detention is issued during the 4th quarter, Mr. Smith will remind this expectation via email to parents and students.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.  We are all looking forward to the end of the year trip!

Sincerely,

Principal Shively, Mr. Smith, and the Middle School Faculty

February Ledger Leaders

Being a Ledger Leader means defining and continually demonstrating our core values of Faith, Learning, Leadership, Respect, Responsibility and Community. Our teachers have submitted students for recognition they feel exhibit these values. The categories for recognition from the middle school are 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade. The four categories for high school were determined by subject groupings: 1) English/Foreign Language, 2) Math/Science/Business, 3) Art/Music/Phy. Ed. and 4) Social Studies/Theology.

Congratulations to the students chosen as the February, 2018 Ledger Leaders!

Brady Freund ’18 (Math/Science/Business), Drew Huck ’18 (Art/Music/Phy ed.), Mitch Waechter ’19 (English/Foreign Language), Calvin Grass ’21 (Social Studies/Theology), Emily Disper (6th Grade), Maggie Sawicki (8th Grade) and Sophie Vande Slunt (7th Grade).

I personally would like to congratulate and say THANK YOU to these students for the impact they have on the SMSA community and for the efforts they make to lead by example!

SMSA Middle School Students Participate in Solo & Ensemble

This past Saturday, 31 instrumental students traveled to Horicon High School to participate in Solo & Ensemble. Solo & Ensemble is a state-wide music competition, with over 100,000 students participating from all over Wisconsin. At the competition, students perform their piece(s) for a judge, receive constructive feedback, and are assigned a ranking. Students from SMSA have been working on their solos or as members of an ensemble since January. Of the 28 events, 17 received a “1” rating. Congratulations to all of our student participants!

Upcoming Forward Exam Dates and Information

Dear Parents,

It’s that time for your children to participate in the state’s standardized test called the “Forward Exam.” Like all standardized tests, it is a snapshot of the skills and knowledge your child demonstrates on that one particular day. That being said, we use the information to show trends of strengths and weaknesses in your child and in each of our grade levels. Taken together, the data will provide the teachers with information they can use to guide their instruction next year.
All students in grades 6-8 will participate in the Forward Exam. All exams will be taken online, and they will practice how to take online exams during the week of March 19th. The battery of exams will take place from March 26th – April 5th. The exact schedule of exams will be shared closer to the event. Results should be sent to the school during the summer and will be sent to you in the early fall.
