Kindergarten – Grade 4

During these formative years, students take part in a musical exploration journey learning the basics of sound, rhythm, and movement. Our classes are high energy and hands-on for students so that they may explore the world of music. In addition to weekly music classes, our students also work hard to prepare for the annual Christmas concert, featuring a Christmas Play where young students get an introduction to SMSA theater. Students at this level, are also very involved with music liturgy as part of weekly prayer services in the Chapel (grades K-2).

Grades 5 – 8

Beginning in grade 5, students can select between concert band and concert choir in place of general music classes, OR opt to be in both. It is here that students are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zone and try things they never imagined through both instrument and voice. Within band, students are also provided small-group lessons to encourage their instrumental growth. Additionally, in 7th/8th grade students prepare to compete annually in Solo & Ensemble where they learn important preparation and performance skills as they prepare a piece for a judge. Band and choir students prepare both a Christmas and Spring concert and it is incredible and inspiring to watch their growth!

Grades 9 – 12

Music offerings at the HS level include Concert Choir, Concert Band, Vocal Jazz, and Jazz Band. As elective courses, it is at this level that students begin to master their art and grow as musicians. Over the course of the past several years, our program has grown in both way of participation and quality, and as a result, our high school students have begun traveling (both nationally and internationally) to perform. Additionally, these students are no stranger to local performances including Christmas caroling, singing Valentines, national anthem appearances,  Solo & Ensemble, and more.
