The St. Mary’s Springs Drama program has been under the direction of Christa Lewis (Rebek) ’95 since 2003. It began as a small program involving roughly 30 students. It has now expanded to roughly 50 students! The students learn basic theater techniques focusing on how to move onstage, the motivation of a character and purposeful movement. Each student is responsible for learning their own lines or songs, preparing their dance routines in rehearsals, helping to paint sets, and taking the set down after a show. The technical crew is another aspect of theater that involves many students. Responsibilities include: student director, stage manager, lights, sound, spotlights, hair and make-up, costumes, props, and backstage help. We also have student ushers at each show.
There are many adults that help keep the program running as well. We have a board of parents known as the Parents for the Performing Arts, and they help with tickets, flowers, programs, costumes, and any other needs the show may have. Parents are welcome to join this club at the beginning of each year. Patron donations help keep these programs running.
Chris Lewis has built the sets since 2003 and has had some parent and student help throughout the years. Chad Kraus has been a key component to training our sound crew, and Pete Chisholm with North Fond du Lac High School is the house director and oversees all building and lighting work. The current band director, Andrea Pannier has been directing the pit for the last four years and continues to find amazing musicians for our pit orchestra.
Pit orchestra members are paid positions and involve many talented community members. We have been fortunate that they have enjoyed working with us and continue to be a part of our shows. We work to keep our Catholic values a part of each show and understand that our faith is a part of everything we do. The prayer before each show is a tradition that has been a part of our program since the early 1990’s as far as any can recollect, and probably long before then. All are welcome to join us and many memories have been made in that wonderful prayer circle.
The drama program continues to flourish and we are proud of the shows we put on. All shows since 2006 have been performed at the Horace Mann High School auditorium, and we are blessed to use such an excellent facility for our shows.
