High School Counseling

From the Office of Tallen Mahaffey - 9th - 12th Guidance Counselor

School Counseling Updates: ACT Prep, Conquering College Costs.

Dear SMSA Parents and Students,

As part of an ongoing process to help put our students in a position to succeed, we will be administering a “Retired” ACT exam. A “Retired” ACT exam is an actual ACT exam that has been used once and then retired-no longer to be used. The exam will be given to all current juniors. The tests will be scored in house by SMSA and the results will be given directly to students during a classroom meeting.

The purpose of taking this “Retired” ACT exam is to help students identify specific areas where they can improve their skills and abilities in Math, Reading, English, Science Reasoning, and Writing. Juniors will then be connected to an individually tailored plan to help improve their knowledge, skills, and abilities. This will in turn, help your daughter/son to be better prepared for success in their future plans in college and in their career choice. Stayed tuned for more news to come on this topic.

A big thank you to all the families who participated in the Conquering College Costs Presentation. This event was well attended and we are looking forward to having a larger turnout next year. The college financial aid officers all had positive comments about our parents and students. Making college an affordable destination for all our students is clearly an option without taking on excessive debt.

We hope to have more to offer our parents and students in the Spring related to the college admissions process from the perspective of college admissions representatives. More information will be forthcoming.
