Class of 2020 – Final Days
Friday, May 22, 2020 is the final day of classes in the high school career of, the SMSA Class of 2020! CONGRATULATIONS to our seniors who have led the school with confidence, conviction and character. We are proud of our seniors and are grateful for the many ways the Class of 2020 has chosen to share their many gifts and talents during their years on the Ledge.
The Class of 2020 are champions, scholars, servant leaders and most impressively to me, disciples. They have kept the faith, even when many would have lost it. Our seniors have been described to me often as resilient. It is an apt description for sure. To be resilient is “the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions…able to recoil or spring back into shape after bending, stretching, or being compressed.” Indeed, much has tested the Class of 2020. Even now, in the final quarter of their high school career, a new adversary COVID-19 has obstructed their pathway to the finish line. But what do I see from our seniors? I see them do what they have chosen to do (yes chosen) countless times as a class: Reach out, stay together and take care of one another! They don’t hesitate to bounce right back! It is not because the Class of 2020 are cockeyed optimists. Rather, they seem to have decided individually and collectively to accept reality as fundamentally good – even when it has brought heartbreak, grief, and deep, soul shaking pain.
The Class of 2020 has demonstrated the ability and desire to overcome adversity. They choose to overcome obstacles and challenges and to keep their heads up. Undoubtedly – just like they did with our younger Ledgers – this group will continue to show others how to do the same. This is the very reason why the SMSA teachers and staff have great faith in our seniors. As they prepare to march forward from the Ledge, their experience and attitude will serve them well.
I thank the Class of 2020 for leading so well this year; for accepting me so generously as their principal; for modeling the Ledger Way for our younger students; and for the impressive legacy of graceful resilience that inspires our community today and will continue to influence generations of Ledgers to come. You are unforgettable! May God continue to bless the St. Mary’s Springs Academy Class of 2020.
