FDL Reporter - More than 75 area high school students will become grill masters at Project G.R.I.L.L. on Friday, May 15, in Fond du Lac.
The G.R.I.L.L. unveiling will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Festival Foods parking lot, 1125 E. Johnson St.
The year-long initiative is designed to introduce high school students to career opportunities available in manufacturing. Project G.R.I.L.L. matches high school technical education departments with area manufacturers in a challenge to work together to design, fabricate and build a charcoal grill from scratch.
This year, nine high school technical education departments and nine area manufacturers have been busy taking grilling to the next level. A “Best of Show” award will be handed out to the most creative and best built grill. Student participants will evaluate each other’s creations to determine the Best of Show recipient. Community members are invited to check out the grills as well and ask students the how’s and why’s behind their grill creations.
Each team is responsible for the design and fabrication from start to finish. Manufacturing partners are available to assist and advise throughout the process. Past Project G.R.I.L.L. creations included a mobile concession stand complete with grill area and plenty of storage, a replica of a biplane, a vastly modified pick-up truck, a transformed baler and many more.
During the process students learn lessons in areas such as project management, budgeting, team building, design, fabrication, finishing, assembly and quality control. Project G.R.I.L.L. is a program of Fond du Lac Works, a division of the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce - designed to introduce high school students to career opportunities available in manufacturing.
The school-manufacturer partnerships for 2014-2015 are:
•Campbellsport High School and Fives Giddings & Lewis
•Fond du Lac High School and Kondex Corporation
•Horace Mann High School and Nemesis Metals
•Laconia High School and Agromatic
•Lomira High School and Mid-States Aluminum
